Week 18 – Children of Bodom

Happy Valentine’s Day Head Bangers (A Day late I know just go with it)

Children of Bodom is the favorite band of a close friend from Espoo, Finland, his twitter account is @juhakun.  Without him I would have never found some of the best Metal I’ve ever heard.  He would send me songs by different bands and soon I was totally immersed in the bands of Finland.   There’s something different in the sound, its hard to explain but, listen to a few bands and I hope you will see what I mean. But as I always say, what speaks to me may not speak you.   This week is for Juha, thank you for showing me a different kind of Metal that is now part of me, I will never forget it or Lemmy.

First a song from COB called “Under Grass and Clover” off their 10th Album “Hexed”, 2019.

Over the last twenty years, Children of Bodom have incorporated many different musical styles into their sound, leading critics and fans to label them as Melodic Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Symphonic Metal, Symphonic Black Metal and neoclassical metal.  I would just like to call it some of the best growl vocals, and hard head banging music I’ve ever heard.   Their mix of melodic hooks and instrumental acrobatics have solidified the band as one of the leading voices of music’s new generation.

Let’s meet the guys:

Alexi Laiho – Guitars & Vocals
Jaska Raatikainen – Drums
Henkka Blacksmith – Bass
Janne Warman – Keyboards
Daniel Freyberg – Guitars

Formed as Inearthed in 1993, The group is led by superstar frontman/guitarist Alexi Laiho, who was voted “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine.  COB albums are no strangers to debut positions on the American Billboard Top 200 chart and with three consecutive albums debuting at number one on Finnish album charts, they are one of their home country’s bestselling artists of all time with more than 250,000 records sold there alone.

One of my favorites, remember the discussion on this one Juha:

Follow the Reaper

I have a few interesting things you might not know:

Children Of Bodom took their name from the 1960 Lake Bodom murders,  where three teenagers were killed in their tent while camping by the lake.  The murder is still unsolved.

Bodom is releasing a beer in association with Fat Lizard Brewing Company, who is based in the band’s hometown of Espoo, Finland.  A promotional video for the lager is posted on YouTube, describing Lake Bodom Pre-Prohibition Lager as “a modern take on a classic with a dark twist.”  “Water used from Lake Bodom puts this over the top and makes it so good you can bury a few in one go, so beware!”  It will go on sale February 1st in Finland.

Everytime I Die

To me Children of Bodom has all the qualities I love in a great Metal Band.  The drums, the bass,  and number one a great singer, Alexi, PERKELE, what a voice with great range and most of all GROWL VOCALS.  As you can see, COB is a lot more than just another Metal Band, they’re involved in other projects, but they never forget the music.  Think about it 20 years and they still have the FIRE……
